Preheated RPOEE as a Renewable Energy for a CRDI Diesel Engine Using Turbocharger and EGR Systems

Crude oil shortages are urgent issues that need to be addressed. Esters are clean energy, produced from biological resources by transesterification. Currently, they are being developed for modern diesel engines, common rail direct injection (CRDI). A major problem of esters that cannot be used as a substitute fuel for CRDI diesel engines is their viscosity, higher than regular diesel. To utilize esters in CRDI diesel engine, preheated is required to reduce their viscosity, but the optimum temperature for heating esters must be studied to improve engine performance and emissions. This research reports the experimentation of preheated refined palm olein ethyl ester (RPOEE) from 40 to 100 ℃, operating with a CRDI diesel engine and combining with turbocharger and EGR systems at a constant speed of 1500 rpm under various powers. Results show that the best engine performance was shown at maximum power. Preheated RPOEE at 80 ℃ provided higher engine performance than non-preheated RPOEE and regular diesel, and RPOEE temperature above 80 ℃ led to a decrease in engine performance. Outstandingly, preheated RPOEE reduced pollutants, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and particulate matter, compared with non-preheated RPOEE. However, preheated RPOEE produced carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides slightly higher than regular diesel.
