The Role of Mirror Neurons in Emotional Processing and Functionality

Mirror neurons’ functioning in emotional processing and functional role are dealt in this chapter. It is the mirror neurons that allow us to complete the understanding and empathy as well as social adjustment in difficult situations. Latest research shows that these neurons also represent objects and actions, which tends to support the hypothesis that neural mechanisms underpin emotion and empathy. The study looks into mirror neuron behavior related to self and others’ recent and distant social emotions, arguing that social cognition includes but is not limited to neurophysiological studies. The chapter discusses how an animal’s adaptability to environment is done through the emotional functionality of social animals. The understanding of neural network models, neuropsychology, intelligent systems, and emotion recognition contributes significantly to such mechanisms. Research findings on visual attention, motion pattern analysis, and bio-systems’ emotional significance. The speech act theory (SAT) shows that social psychology and animal communication are important. New discoveries, such as the activation of delay neurons in monkeys watching actions, are enlightening us to the shared neurological substrate for making sense of actions. This study demonstrates that having an interdisciplinary approach can show the relationship between mirror neurons and social cognition. Thus, let’s leave groundwork for future studies that will show the relationship between emotion and empathy.
