Defence cooperation within the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) has been and continues to be one of the areas that has made the most progress in the context of strategic cooperation. Brazil, in particular, has played a significant role in this. Nevertheless, over the last 25 years, the CPLP’s focus on the geostrategic centrality of Africa, particularly the Gulf of Guinea, has appeared tentative, considering that this is a region where Brazil seeks to increase its geopolitical influence. Highlighting the region’s maritime significance and shared Portuguese language presents important challenges and opportunities for both the CPLP and Brazil. The primary aim is to establish a more active and sustained role for Brazil, allowing it to act as a promoter of security and development in its strategic zone of influence, which encompasses the African continent and its maritime region in the South Atlantic. This study examines the potential for Brazil to leverage the CPLP to strengthen bilateral defence cooperation in the Gulf of Guinea.
