This chapter explores the evolution of the Coordination of the South Atlantic Maritime Area (CAMAS—“Coordenador da Área Marítima do Atlântico Sul”), an international collaborative body contributing to South Atlantic maritime security. It examines CAMAS’ role and unravels its significance through a bottom-up approach, considering that the region’s oceanic spaces must be protected from various contemporary threats. Embracing a group of diplomatic and defence institutions with advanced technological capabilities and an integrated approach, the CAMAS has proven to be a valuable tool, enhancing situational awareness, facilitating information sharing, and promoting collaboration within South American countries. Moreover, it significantly collaborated to strengthen maritime security in the South Atlantic through different commitments with West African individual actors and other regimes, such as the South Atlantic Peace and Cooperation Zone (ZOPACAS), from operational exercises to technology transferring and sharing. The methodology in this study includes an approach based on mixed methods, in which not only the review of the pertinent literature but also the surveying and systematising of information that qualifies the exercise of the CAMAS are decisive for the analysis. The persistent security challenges require sustained efforts to overcome them, where cooperative knowledge has been upheld through good practices and the advancement of the International Practice Theory. What the contemporary role of CAMAS as a regional sub-regime would be? It is crucial to understand how the CAMAS framework has evolved from an Inter-American tentative regime to a subregional autonomous instrument reaching beyond borders and underneath political inconsistencies, as well as how Brazil has been a lead in guaranteeing expertise and maritime awareness. The chapter concludes that CAMAS can be understood as a community of security practice and a technical sub-regime of the Inter-American Defence Board that gained institutional strength by adapting to geopolitical transformations throughout time. It ensures efficiency and sustainability in its area of responsibility, especially as an interface with other regimes.
