Digital Platforms and Gender Inequalities in the Moroccan Transport Market: Towards a Gendered Institutional Void Theory
摘要
The advent of digital transformation has had a profound impact on the landscape of entrepreneurial opportunities, particularly in developing countries, by opening new pathways for growth. However, women in these contexts frequently encounter institutional voids that impede their capacity to fully capitalise on these opportunities. This disparity is particularly evident in nascent sectors such as ride-hailing, which has experienced exponential growth in Morocco in recent years but remains relatively understudied. This research employs a qualitative methodology, involving semi-structured interviews with 15 Moroccan women who are active on digital platforms. The findings, analysed using NVivo software, reveal the primary challenges faced by these women, most notably the absence of an adequate regulatory framework for ride-hailing. Furthermore, the study emphasises the pivotal role of digital proficiency in surmounting these obstacles, and offers policy recommendations to bolster the advancement of female entrepreneurship in Morocco, with the objective of fostering a more conducive environment.
