In 2000, a small research group on biomineralization was established inside The University of Tokyo by four researchers, Dr. K. Endo, Dr. T. Kogure, Dr. T. Watanabe, and myself. It grew bigger by taking in other lab members in the same university and those of other universities around Tokyo. It became nationwide in 2006 through the advice by Prof. I. Kobayashi to start as “Biomineralization Workshop,” which has been held annually. More than 100 students and researchers participate in it every time and it offers a good opportunity to know each other and exchange ideas. This research group is the only one biomineralization research group in Japan. The main members of this group established the organizing committee of BIOMIN XIV held at Tsukuba in 2017.
