Teaching Persian Politeness to Non-Persian Speakers
摘要
Teaching a second language should by no means be limited to grammar and vocabulary, as effective communication requires a broader competence of sociocultural norms, particularly politeness, which holds significance in Persian. Persian politeness is deeply ingrained in cultural values, hierarchical structures, and linguistic expressions, highlighting the need for well-designed instructional methods for non-native learners. To address this issue, a semi-structured in-depth interview was conducted with four experienced teachers of Persian as a second language to explore their challenges and affordances in teaching Persian politeness. As reported by the participants, teaching Persian politeness to non-Persian speakers requires a multifaceted approach that combines linguistic instruction with cultural engagement. The findings suggest that creating an interactive and experiential learning environment, involving activities such as role-playing tasks and real-life scenarios, can help learners grasp the contextual application of Persian politeness norms, positively influencing their ability to navigate the intricacies of Persian politeness.
