Sharing Humanity Through Storytelling: A Pedagogical Approach to Cultural Inclusivity
摘要
The paper throws light upon the significance of storytelling as a method of promoting cultural inclusivity. The pedagogical approach attempts to create avenues toward sustainability, diversity, and inclusion. Taking a cue from the Tamil Purananuru song “yaadum oorey yaavurum kelir” meaning “the whole world is my town, all humans are my relatives” which was sung in the United Nations some time ago, the proposed conceptual framework called KEWL (Knowledge-Enlightenment-Wisdom Lab) which is envisioned in the shape of a Bodhi tree with five branches representing themes of courage, leadership, benevolence, truth, and justice drawn from the Tamil classical Puram poetics. Through the KEWL framework, it is possible to revisit the stories of nature-culture and reconcile with a healthy indigenous approach to life in the classroom. The stories as social, cultural, and environmental discourse emerge as tools of consciousness-raising in an era controlled by narratives of insensitivity and indifference. It radically re-envisions the ecological principles of courage to voice the voiceless, leadership to promote interconnectedness, and benevolence that results from the worldview of abundance and justice that may bring forth peace and harmony in this world.
