From AI Literacy to Generative AI Literacy: Conceptualization and Frameworks

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) refers to a category of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms that produce new outputs based on the data they have been trained on. Unlike traditional AI systems, which focus on recognizing patterns and making predictions, GenAI creates original content, including images, text, audio, and more (World Economic Forum, 2023). This technology has gained significant attention in recent years due to advancements in machine learning, particularly in deep learning techniques. It employs a type of deep learning known as generative adversarial networks (GANs) to produce new content. A GAN consists of two neural networks: a generator that creates new data and a discriminator that evaluates it. The generator and discriminator collaborate, with the generator refining its outputs based on feedback from the discriminator until the generated content is indistinguishable from real data. GenAI has a wide array of applications, including (e.g., Giannakos et al., 2024; Yusuf 2025):There are growing concerns that GenAI and automation may result in job displacement and unemployment, as machines increasingly take over tasks previously performed by humans (Woodruff et al., 2024). Many worry that the rising adoption of AI will contribute to a shrinking job market, especially in sectors like manufacturing, customer service, and data entry. Goldman Sachs predicts 300 million jobs will be lost or degraded by artificial intelligence across the world (Kelly, 2023). In the United States, there has been a dramatic rise in the demand for AI-related skills over the past twenty years. This demand has surpassed the overall demand for general computer skills, with AI proficiency providing a significant wage premium for employees. In the United Kingdom, AI could automate 10–30% of jobs, and more than 75 percent of companies globally intend to adopt AI and related technologies in the next 5 years (O’dea et al., 2024). A common perspective is that AI will transform the current employment landscape. The influence of GenAI technologies extends well beyond the job market, significantly changing how people process information and interact with digital content. While it may replace certain professions and create new opportunities, it is unlikely to fully replace human roles.
