Inclusive Design, Accessibility, and Human-Centered Design for AI-Empowered Learning Systems

In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative force across industries, reshaping how we work, learn, and interact with technology (Ng et al., 2021). As AI becomes increasingly integrated into education, it is crucial to ensure that learning resources are accessible to all individuals, regardless of their backgrounds, abilities, or circumstances. Inclusive design and accessibility are not just ethical imperatives; they are essential for creating equitable opportunities for diverse AI learners. In this chapter, we begin by exploring the commonalities and differences between inclusive design and accessibility from a logical perspective (Sect. 11.2). We then summarize literature and empirical studies that address inclusive design and accessibility in real-world contexts (Sect. 11.3). Building on these studies and existing literature, we identify diverse learners’ everyday challenges. Following this, we outline the core principles of inclusive design and propose strategies to ensure accessibility (Sects. 11.4 and 11.5). Finally, we envision the potential difficulties and recommendations needed to achieve truly inclusive and accessible AI systems.
