Nurturing Talent Development among Gifted Minority Students: Promoting Racial and Ethnic Identity Development Through Strength-Based Cultural Engagement
摘要
Nurturing talent development among gifted minority students is increasing as a priority among gifted education stakeholders. The process of developing talent amongst gifted minority students presents unique psychosocial and emotional challenges, while simultaneously providing opportunities to support development of a racial and ethnic identity and personal resiliency that are pivotal in their well-being and persistence. In the present chapter, we discuss how promoting racial and ethnic identity development through cultural engagement presents a strength-based pathway that can support resilience among these students. Specifically, this chapter is organized accordingly: (a) discuss the value of identity, and more specifically how racial and ethnic identity development can positively influence talent development and enhance resiliency and well-being for gifted minority students; (b) define and discuss the importance of “cultural engagement” in promoting racial and ethnic identity development, and (c) apply specific strength-based strategies that embody the nuances of power and culture through engaging with families, schools, and communities. The purpose is to present an integrative resiliency framework that can build on existing cultural strengths, change talent development trajectories through strength-based intervention strategies, and promote gifted minority student well-being through strengthening of a personal identity.
