Santal Lifeworld in an Urban Fringe Settlement
摘要
The chapter is an attempt to document the social worlds and the everyday lived realities of the Santal margins in an urban fringe settlement that contributed significantly in shaping their lifeworld in the city. The emergence of the tribal ghettos in the urban fringe not only helped the migrants imagine a space where they can live their native self, creation of such tribal communes is also seen as a space that articulates a counter-hegemonic assertion to negotiate the dominance of the Bengali community in the city. Social and cultural lifeworld of the Santals in the ghettos is thus not merely about sustaining their ethnic practices in the city, the assertion of the practices is a reactionary response to the cultural hegemony of the Bengalis in Kolkata.
