Kuwait’s tryst with political instability continued in 2023 and 2024 with both year witnessing the dissolution of the parliament and snap elections to elect a new parliament. The tussle between the government appointed by the Emir and the elected parliamentarians has for long kept the political situation uncertain hampering economic growth and governance. A power transition occurred in December 2023 as Crown Prince Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah succeeded Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah as the new Emir following the latter’s demise. In June 2024, Emir Mishal appointed former prime minister, Prince Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Sabah as his Heir Apparent clearing the line of succession and ending speculations about who will lead the country in the future. Indo-Kuwaiti relations have remained subdued compared to other Gulf countries. However, the long-anticipated visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Kuwait in December 2024, the first since 1981, is expected to strengthen bilateral ties. Energy security, Indian expatriates, trade and investments, as well as better security and defense ties form the core of the relations.
