Yemen has remained embroiled in a civil war and a political and humanitarian crisis since 2014, with the political instability going back to the 2011 uprising. Despite a ceasefire, occasional violence had disrupted any possibility of peace. Three major factions have emerged, namely the Iran-aligned Houthis in the north, the Saudi-aligned internationally-recognized government headed by the Rashad al-Alimi, the chairman of the Aden-based Presidential Leadership Council, and the Aden-based and UAE-supported Southern Transition Council (STC) that wants to ceded and revive South Yemen as a separate and sovereign state. The Houthis involvement in the Hamas-Israel war has further complicated the matter, reducing any chances of peace and stability. Given the conflict and divisions in Yemen, India’s engagement with the country has remained limited, with New Delhi preferring to engage in Yemen with the help of friends in Saudi Arabia, Oman and UAE.
