Urban freight movement in Kozhikode, a major trade district in Kerala, faces challenges due to heavy reliance on congested roads, particularly near the primary market in the early mornings. Limited adoption of shared delivery services persists for the urban freight movement of fruits. This reluctance is likely driven by concerns over potential delays during delivery, which could lead to spoilage or quality degradation. Therefore, this study was undertaken to gauge fruit retailers’ receptivity to shared delivery services and to design an optimal shared delivery network, utilizing the Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem approach. Our study found that 87.5% of fruit retailers expressed willingness to participate in shared delivery services, contingent upon faster delivery times, consistent product freshness and quality guarantees, and a streamlined process for replacing damaged goods. The analysis revealed significant potential for reduced vehicle kilometers traveled. This translates to lower fuel consumption and emissions, contributing to environmental sustainability.
