In five pillar road safety system approach, building safer road is one of the key features for road safety and it is only possible by building smart road with proper communication between road environment and road users using latest technologies. So, in this research a road indices has been developed using the artificial intelligence. As an initiative taken by the Indian government (MoRTH), the project iRASTE Nagpur aimed to develop a RQI and RSI. For this purpose, a collision avoidance system (CAS) which is AI-based device and comprise of advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), has been installed in passenger freight vehicle to record the real time data of different collision warnings like FCW, HMW, LDW, and PCW. The paper focuses the development of road safety index (RSI) with the data collected by CAS device and other data collected by inventory and taken from other sources. The outcome of this research will help the agencies to identify the links to be developed for maintain the assured road quality and safe movement of the traffic. The more RSI score value means more unsafe road segment and less RSI score means safer road segment.
