Researching religion is complicated because there are different dimensions to it, including visible practices, professed beliefs that might be ascertained through interviews, and spiritual experiences that can be unpredictable. Sometimes it has been assumed that religious change within a culture is a result of outside change agents but there is evidence that continuity with the past has been an important factor too. The “new” religion can be seen as a fulfilment of existing cultural elements.
