Data analytics has significantly impacted the sports industry, revolutionizing athlete performance, team strategy, and fan engagement. This review explores the current applications of data analytics in sports and identifies areas that remain underutilized. Ten established areas of application are discussed, including injury prevention, player tracking, performance optimization, and game outcome prediction. These applications demonstrate how data-driven insights have enhanced decision-making, improved player safety, and optimized training regimens. Despite these advances, several aspects of sports remain underexplored by data analytics. This review highlights five key areas with potential for future development: emotional and psychological monitoring of athletes, ethical integrity and fairness oversight, environmental sustainability of sports events, personalized nutrition based on genetic data, and the enhancement of spectator experiences in real-time. Addressing these gaps could unlock new opportunities for innovation and elevate the sports industry. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of data analytics in sports and suggests directions for future research and application, emphasizing the potential for data-driven solutions to shape the future of sports.
