This chapter presents the process and results of the first-phase study, exploring the external feedback dialogues between the Chinese international doctoral students and their non-Chinese supervisors, which are embodied in the feedback provision and responses. Data collected consists of the first and second PhD proposal drafts from each of the six Chinese international doctoral students, where their supervisors’ written feedback and their corresponding feedback responses are embedded respectively. Constant comparison and theory-informed categorisation were used to analyse (1) supervisors’ in-text feedback in terms of feedback foci and linguistic formulations; and (2) students’ feedback responses regarding the extent to which students apply the feedback. With the development of two analytical frameworks and revision ratings, the findings about feedback provision reveal supervisors’ expectations and evaluation criteria for doctoral writing, and those about feedback responses show students’ external feedback engagement and preferences.

摘要
