Metallic Nanoparticles for Wound Healing Management: A Promising Therapeutic Approach

Wounds are a most important medical concern, and they are getting more frequent as a result of burns, surgeries, traumas, and long-term illnesses like diabetes. Chronic wounds pose a significant burden on healthcare systems worldwide, impacting ~6.5 million individuals yearly, resulting in substantial economic expenses for treating and managing wounds, necessitating innovative and efficient wound dressing materials and formulations. Recent progress in nanotechnology has resulted in the development of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) as a promising therapeutic approach for wound healing because of their unique physical, chemical, and optical characteristics. Nanoparticles can change the wound environment from one that is not healing to one that is healing through their antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and angiogenic properties. Biocompatible metallic nanoparticle-loaded wound dressing provides a revolutionary way to successfully overcome the inherent disadvantages of standard wound dressing materials. This chapter explores the wound-healing process and its basic mechanisms. Documented the efficiency of metal nanoparticles, including silver, gold, zinc oxide, and copper, in enhancing wound healing through their antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and tissue-regenerative properties. Additionally, the chapter discusses the challenges associated with the use of metal nanoparticles in wound healing and outlines future perspectives on their applications.
