Mobile devices and gamification can be of significant value in creating new learning styles and new pedagogical frameworks, which equip scholars with critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Three unique coding apps, TANKS, RANGERS and BOATS, which are supplemented with coding kits, lesson plans and teacher training material have reached over 100 000 scholars and over 20 000 teachers. They have been trained in workshops in South Africa, through the work of an initiative called Tangible Africa. Teachers play a crucial role in integrating technology in the education system and it is essential to train teachers adequately to use technology effectively in the classroom. The research objective of this study was to determine the challenges and highlights experienced by facilitators teaching coding to teachers and scholars, with mobile devices, using the coding games App on mobile devices. The study was qualitative and the questionnaire included open ended questions to determine what facilitators felt about their experiences while facilitating the coding workshops. The results for the open ended questions from 41 facilitators were thematically analysed. The findings revealed that the majority of the trained facilitators felt positive about coding and teaching scholars coding principles. Different challenges and highlights were experienced by facilitators working in urban areas and rural areas where the infrastructure is a challenge.
