Social media platforms have become ubiquitous in the world of learning. Compounded by smartphone technology, learning has transcended the limits of geographic location and the sensitivities of time. Hosted within the larger LinkedIn platform, LinkedIn Learning offers users curated courses, which may upskill users and increase their employability. These asynchronous, online courses allow each user to autonomously create their own ‘playlist’ of courses to work through, which culminates in certificates and achievements which their colleagues or employers may publicly share on their profile pages. Due to its accessibility and adaptability in digitally driven industries, many companies have encouraged their employees to enrol in LinkedIn Learning courses. Underpinned by self-regulation theory, the study is based on the experiences of academics in a private higher education institution in South Africa who have made use of LinkedIn Learning since the end of 2022. It uncovers the rollout and reception of LinkedIn Learning, benefits and challenges of offering access to such a platform as well as the perceptions around the ‘weight’ of LinkedIn Learning achievements. Based on these insights, the paper will shed light whether these courses have contributed to upskilling and employability in the South African higher education environment.

摘要
