Non-invasive Ventilation for Acute Exacerbation of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: Brochard et al.
摘要
Can non-invasive ventilation improve outcomes in exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)? This pivotal trial assessed the effectiveness of non-invasive ventilation in patients with acute exacerbations of COPD. In a multicenter, randomized trial, 136 patients with acute respiratory failure due to COPD exacerbation were assigned to receive either conventional treatment or NIV. The results demonstrated that NIV significantly reduced the need for endotracheal intubation and decreased in-hospital mortality compared to conventional therapy. The study provided strong evidence that NIV could be a life-saving intervention in managing acute exacerbations of COPD, transforming the management of this condition in critically ill patients.
