Do pulmonary artery catheters (PACs) improve outcomes in critically ill patients? The PAC-Man trial assessed whether the use of PACs improves outcomes in critically ill patients compared to standard care without PACs. This multicenter randomized controlled trial enrolled critically ill patients, randomizing them to management with or without PACs. The study found no significant difference in 30-day mortality between the two groups. Additionally, PAC use did not reduce ICU length of stay or complications, raising questions about its routine use in critical care. The findings suggest that PACs provide limited clinical benefit and emphasize the need for alternative strategies to guide hemodynamic management.
