A Combined Sedation and Ventilator Weaning Protocol for Mechanically Ventilated Patients: The ABC Trial
摘要
In mechanically ventilated patients, does a paired strategy of daily interruption of sedation and spontaneous breathing trials reduce the duration of mechanical ventilation? This pivotal randomized controlled trial (RCT) evaluated the impact of pairing daily sedation interruptions with spontaneous breathing trials in mechanically ventilated ICU patients. The patient group that received the paired protocol experienced significantly shorter durations of mechanical ventilation and ICU stay compared to the control group, which followed standard care. Importantly, the trial demonstrated no increase in serious adverse events in the paired protocol group. The findings underscored the importance of minimizing sedation and promoting early liberation from mechanical ventilation to improve patient outcomes.
