The convenience and automation offered by smart home devices have changed the way we live, making our homes more efficient, comfortable, and connected than ever before. These smart home devices prioritize cost and functionality over robust security measures and pose significant security challenges. In this paper, a comprehensive overview of different cyberattacks targeting smart homes and identifying the most prevalent attack vectors and vulnerabilities will be presented. The MITRE ATT&CK framework will also be explored for the identification and categorization of the tactics and techniques employed in smart home cyberattacks using different case studies. Effective mitigation strategies to protect against these attacks identified through the ATT&CK framework will be proposed. The analysis will reveal how certain MITRE ATT&CK techniques for smart camera, smart lighting system, and smart lock correlate with tailored mitigation strategies. This study intends to help different stakeholders to advance vulnerability research without overlooking the common tactics and techniques used by malicious actors to attack different smart home devices.
