Since March 2020 when COVID-19 was declared a pandemic by WHO, the world has been hit with several strains of the virus. Currently, there are six clusters of COVID-19 based on a group of symptoms, which indicate how unwell a patient could become. A new normal has developed and everyone’s life has changed including huge losses to businesses. With the daily increase in COVID-19 cases amidst inadequate vaccine and indefinite treatment, early detection is recommended for quick/immediate decisions to ensure effective control of the virus. Meanwhile, even though the COVID-19 results by standard PCR have been more accessible than in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, the cost still limits many people to patronize it, thus, making a case for a rapid diagnostic test kit. In this brief, we shall explore the situation on COVID-19, the management and the available tests for the detection of COVID-19 cases, and why the RDT test kit is seen as an obvious choice for point-of-care. The merits and demerits of the RDT test kits for COVID-19 will also be discussed.
