Co-infection; A Neglected Health Condition in Northern Ghana in the Wake of COVID-19
摘要
During the upsurge of COVID-19 infection, a lot of attention was shifted away from other common infections of public health interest such as malaria, hepatitis B, TB, HIV, etc. The prominence given to COVID-19 also resulted in the near breakout of yellow fever disease in the Savannah Region of Ghana. With the COVID-19 restrictions, many individuals stayed home with these common conditions (malaria, hepatitis B, TB, HIV, etc.), thus, recording low prevalences at the hospitals, encouraging self-medication, and enabling co-infections to thrive. It became apparent that the COVID-19 pandemic exposed the level of preparedness of Ghana as a nation in addressing public health issues in real-time. This chapter will focus on the prevalence, consequences, and management of several key infectious diseases in Ghana with particular reference to co-infections common in northern Ghana. Co-infections are a significant public health concern, especially in low-resource contexts such as Ghana where several infectious agents affect a single host simultaneously.
