Simulation Modeling of Traffic Congestion Problem at Mukkam Junction
摘要
Traffic congestion remains a critical issue in urban transportation systems, significantly impacting economic productivity, environmental quality, and overall quality of life. This study focuses on the traffic congestion problem at Mukkam junction, in Calicut, Kerala, India, which experiences significant delays and traffic during peak hours. The primary objectives are to analyze traffic patterns, classify vehicle types, identify peak congestion hours, and develop a simulation model using Python for traffic flow analysis. Data was collected over an 8-h period, capturing real-time traffic flow including buses, cars, and bikes. The data was processed and analyzed using Python libraries for comprehensive statistical analysis and visualization. The results indicate distinct traffic patterns with pronounced peaks during office and school hours, highlighting the critical congestion periods. The study also discusses the impact of various vehicle types on overall traffic flow using Passenger Car Units (PCU) for standardization. The findings provide valuable insights into traffic dynamics at Mukkam junction and suggest potential strategies for mitigating congestion. This research contributes to the broader field of traffic management by demonstrating the application of simulation techniques to urban traffic problems and offers practical implications for traffic planners.
