We previously reviewed on circulating tumor cell (CTC) cell lines and the establishment of each CTC cell line under specific conditions. There is currently no standard method for establishing CTC cell lines. With recent advances in CTC cultures, we reexamined culture methods and CTC research and noted some limitations and an essential crux. Importantly, progress in short-term CTC cultures now allows for their application to precision medicine. The next challenge in this field is the establishment of easy, rapid, and inexpensive methods to cultivate CTCs recovered from individual patients.
