Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are considered as lifestyle disorders that eventually turn chronic and potentially fatal. Significant changes in lifestyles and food preferences lead to an imbalance between energy expenditure and calorie intake, which eventually results in obesity. NCDs are caused by a variety of risk factors, including biological and behavioral ones. It is significant to note that majority of deaths from NCDs are thought to be avoidable by eliminating four behavioral risk factors, i.e., unhealthy diets, alcohol abuse, tobacco use and physical inactivity, which in turn contribute to the biological risk factors. NCDs are threat to global economy and healthcare industry as the process of diagnosis, prevention, and treatment involves a significant wastage of infrastructure, money, time, and human resources. Implementing NCD prevention measures is believed to be the most cost-effective, sustainable, and affordable approach to reduce the incidence of chronic diseases worldwide. Adopting healthy lifestyle, providing societal awareness, deciding on national health policies, overseeing the global health strategy, and putting specific initiatives and innovations into practice are some of the ways to prevent NCDs. Further, the “invisible epidemic” of NCDs can be effectively controlled by addressing modifiable risk factors, early detection programs and adopting healthy lifestyles (screening high-risk populations).

摘要
