Environmental Chemicals and Risk of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a multifactorial disorder affecting premenopausal women. PCOS is characterized by oligo/anovulation, hyperandrogenism, and polycystic ovaries. According to Rotterdam criteria, the presence of any two features indicates the manifestation of PCOS. Environmental exposure to toxicants, particularly endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), has become unavoidable and has taken a toll on female fertility. EDCs are a major class of exogenous compounds that encompasses bisphenol A (BPA), BPA analogues, phthalates, di(2-ethyl hexyl) phthalate (DEHP), tributylin, heavy metals, pesticides, diethylstilbestrol (DES), and anti-androgens. These compounds are found in plastic products, plasticizers, cosmetics, personal care products, pharmaceuticals, antifouling agents, beverages, food containers, seafood products, contraceptive pills, etc. Several in vivo, in vitro, and epidemiological studies have established that EDCs mimic natural hormones and affect the folliculogenesis, granulosa, and theca cell function, resulting in decreased fertility in women. This review showcases the PCOS-inducing effects of EDCs. However, its exact etiology has not yet been clearly defined. PCOS is a lifestyle disease, and therefore, it can be managed through lifestyle changes like regular exercise, weight management, and a healthy diet.
