This chapter is the main body of my book. In this chapter, I will ultimately demonstrate that the essence of translation is the ferrying of meaning. My demonstration embraces analytic and synthetic elucidations. In analytic elucidations, I will follow Husserl’s habit to delimit and tease out some concepts closely related to the theme to obtain clarity. They include meaning, intentionality, internal time-consciousness, and so on. In synthetic elucidations, I will first describe the kernel ideas of phenomenological theory of meaning such as the apriority of meaning, the relationship between word and meaning. Second, I will explore how to fuse the ideas and methods of phenomenological theory of meaning with the investigation into translation essence. Given that a ferrying platform is needed to accomplish the connection between them, in the first place, I will investigate into the consensus between Benjamin’s and general hermeneutical views of translation, on the one hand, and phenomenology, on the other, and the hierarchical relationships amid them, at the level of translation essence; in the second place, I will falsify “To translate is to interpret” and legitimate the SDH hermeneutic model to corroborate the enlightenment offered by phenomenological theory of meaning to the two views of translation at issue; finally, I will perform the analysis of translation essence at the two levels of language and consciousness.
