With the tremendous use of mobile phones, Quick Response (QR) codes have gained popularity and are being used in various applications such as product marketing, brand promotion, and product tracking by a large number of individuals every day. Traditional QR codes’ appearance is not appealing and contains noise-like patterns. Existing works have created a range of strategies to improve the visually unpleasant effect of QR codes. This research, however, still leaves a lot to be desired, so it becomes fundamental to comprehend the present status of the innovations in beautification, their implementation, challenges, and the scope for future work. This paper, explains the basics of QR codes and various beautification techniques to embed an image on QR codes. Different beautification methods and approaches are categorized according to the strategies used.
