Loopholes of Two-Factor Authentication and the Rise of Multi-factor Authentication

To protect digital assets and user data from the growing number of cyberattacks, the use of multi-factor authentication (MFA) has become an essential cybersecurity measure. This comprehensive review paper aims to analyze the current state of MFA systems, examining their development, effectiveness, and potential areas for improvement. Additionally, the paper discusses the vulnerabilities of two-factor authentication, which compromises user information security and privacy. The paper begins by providing an overview of the fundamental principles and concepts that form the basis of MFA, including its historical background and its role in enhancing security in various domains. The focus is primarily on the key components of MFA, which include knowledge-based factors (such as passwords), possession-based factors (such as smartcards or tokens), and inherence-based factors (such as bio-metrics). The strengths and weaknesses of these factors are thoroughly examined. Furthermore, the paper explores adaptive authentication, mobile-based authentication, and other recent advancements in MFA technologies. In conclusion, this review paper emphasizes the importance of MFA as a crucial cybersecurity tool for protecting digital assets and user data.
