The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a constitutional federation consisting of seven emirates and is an evolving nation in terms of healthcare. The demographic landscape of the UAE presents a rich tapestry of cultures, religious customs, and evolving mental health perspectives. Rapid urbanisation, economic growth, and stresses on a diverse expatriate workforce present significant challenges. Reports estimate that about 15% of the Gulf Cooperation Council population suffers from a mental disorder annually, indicating the widespread nature of mental health issues. This chapter examines the UAE’s progress in addressing mental health issues, provides historical perspectives, and aims to identify challenges in integrating equitable, culturally sensitive, and community-based mental health services for the region. It will also discuss policies and interventions as opportunities for improving mental health support strategies. As the country continues developing its health system, the UAE is well-positioned to emerge as a regional leader in mental health reform.
