Mental Healthcare in Qatar: Services, Developments, and Challenges
摘要
The health sector in the State of Qatar witnessed progressive development over the years, with a focus on health, education, and research. It secured international accreditations for its services and training programs, such as the Joint Commission International and the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education. Mental health services were pivotal in these initiatives. In a country where the majority of the population is formed of expatriates, with different languages, cultural backgrounds, and mental health needs, this can be very challenging. Local resources are never sufficient to meet the manpower demands in health; the gap is very evident in mental health services. In this chapter, we will describe the evolution of mental health in Qatar and its progress to the current provisions. We will allude to the influence of culture and religion throughout, from stigma to treatment-seeking. The multiple achievements will be discussed while also addressing the many challenges. We followed with a discussion of suggested opportunities for improvement.
