Social media has become a force majeure in defining the world of the twenty-first century with its growing user base, especially among children and the young adults. Its wide influence in shaping the thought processes of individuals and communities can hardly be denied as it constantly evolves itself by analysing human behaviour via algorithms and other tools. Consequently, its effect on human population and its behaviour has been much debated by critics and social scientists. Therefore, it becomes an indispensable exercise to interrogate and explore the various aspects of social media and their utility for the current generation of young learners. This book chapter is an inquiry into the relationship among self, society, and social media. It begins by discussing the definition and importance of social media in today’s world and goes on to investigate the ways in which social media, a massive cultural force, has altered our perception of the self and goes on to study its effects by employing fictional characters and events. Subsequently, the chapter classifies social media into various types based on their functionality and user base and goes on to discuss the complexities of this categorisation. Furthermore, this chapter deals with the issues surrounding online self-representations and self-fashioning on social media and moves forward to elucidate the steps to construct one’s cohesive social identity on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn. This section also deals with the unique aspects of these platforms with respect to their user bases, features, popularity, and engagement with the target audience. Finally, it looks at the benefits of having a social media presence, and subsequently, it also delves into the disadvantages of having an online persona, in terms of its negative consequences like trolling and cyberbullying.
