GABA transporters (GATs) help mediate plant stress tolerance. Exploring their mechanisms of action, regulation, and noteworthy role in various stress conditions assumes great significance, both from academic and crop augmentation points of view. GATs are specialized membrane-bound proteins that facilitate the uptake and release of GABA across cellular compartments, ensuring its proper distribution and availability for metabolic and signaling functions. Under abiotic stress conditions, such as drought, salinity, and temperature extremes, the regulation and activity of GATs are essential for maintaining cellular homeostasis. These transporters, encoded by specific gene families, are highly responsive to environmental cues, enabling the plant to adapt to adverse conditions by modulating GABA levels. The chapter highlights the molecular characteristics of GABA transporters, their proton-coupled transport mechanisms, and their localization in different cellular membranes. Furthermore, this chapter also covers recent advancements in understanding GABA transporter regulation, including posttranslational modifications and transcriptional control under stress conditions.
