Land degradation is a major concern affecting biodiversity, ecosystem services, livelihoods, and access to food. This issue is exacerbated by the proliferation of Invasive Alien Species (IAPs), which destroy natural habitats and stifle native species. Biochar, a carbon-rich material generated during the pyrolysis of organic wastes, promises a viable solution to mitigate the negative impacts of IAPs, while also enhancing soil health. This study attempts to investigate the possibilities of biochar production from crop waste and invasive plant materials and understand its potential role in restoring damaged ecosystems. The paper examines initiatives made for the production of biochar, evaluates the related policy and governance frameworks, and extracts lessons from a number of case studies. Additionally, the challenges and impediments to the adoption of biochar and possible solutions were explored. Enhancing soil fertility and sequestering carbon, biochar helps to support sustainable agriculture practices by converting ecological risks into valuable resources. The incorporation of biochar into circular economy models presents economic potential, decreases environmental degradation, and further encourages waste valuation in the context of agricultural and land restoration. The study intends to demonstrate the value of biochar in ecological restoration, sustainable agriculture, and climate change mitigation.
