According to reports, Indian blue carbon ecosystems store about 67.35 Tg (Teragram) of carbon. Mangroves, seagrass, and salt marshes are the three principal Blue Carbon Ecosystems (BCEs) found throughout the 7516.6 km of Indian coastline, which includes the mainland, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep Islands. The Sundarbans, the biggest mangrove forest in the world, are situated between Bangladesh and India. The mangrove ecosystem is the largest in terms of area and has been shown to store 67 Tg of carbon. On the other hand, the estimated areas of seagrass and salt marsh are 500 km2 and 1611 km2, respectively, and are reported to store 0.0679 Tg of carbon combined. However, the baseline data regarding carbon sequestered by BCEs are highly limited, and more systematic and extensive field research is needed to understand the carbon sequestration potential. The extent of BCEs based on published literature indicates that the Indian coastline has potential BCEs that can help act as a natural solution to climate change by effectively absorbing and storing large amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
