Adapting to Climate Change in Dryland Ecosystems; Mitigation and Resilience Through Ecosystem-Based Adaptation

Rapid climate change has driven nations and organizations to develop strategies for adapting to shifting environmental conditions, prompting the need for evidence-based adaptations that guide focus and maximize effectiveness. Ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA), which integrates ecosystem resilience into climate adaptation policies, is increasingly adopted worldwide. These adaptations are especially relevant in arid regions where communities rely heavily on natural resources for daily needs (Seddon et al. 2016). EbA strategies encompass biodiversity and ecosystem services as essential elements for managing climate-related challenges within broader adaptation frameworks. These adaptations have evolved to incorporate sustainable management, conservation, and restoration practices, offering socioeconomic co-benefits for local communities. Notable examples include the conservation and restoration of forests and vegetation to stabilize slopes and prevent landslides, the regulation of water flows to reduce flash flooding risk, and the restoration of dryland ecosystems to moderate temperature shifts and protect against soil erosion. Additionally, dryland EbA strategies aid in adapting to changing rainfall patterns, providing critical resilience in the face of climate variability.
