Study of the Impact of Irrigation on Groundwater Quality in the Jam River Basin, Nashik and Ahilyanagar Districts, Maharashtra, India

The present study investigates the impact of irrigation on groundwater quality in the Jam River Basin, located in Nashik and Ahilyanagar districts, Maharashtra, India. 60 groundwater samples were collected and analyzed during the pre- and post-monsoon seasons of 2020 and 2021. Sampling sites were selected based on hydrogeological, geological, and land-use parameter variations. The study observed significant effects of irrigation on groundwater chemistry, including salinization, waterlogging, nitrate contamination, and boron toxicity. The findings reveal that groundwater salinization is a cumulative result of several interacting factors, including semi-arid climate, over-irrigation, chemical fertilizer usage, flood irrigation, and monoculture cropping, especially sugarcane. Nitrate contamination and boron toxicity were prominent in the northeastern part of the irrigated area and were linked to waterlogging and excessive fertilizer application. The study emphasizes the need for proper water and land resource management to mitigate the adverse effects of irrigation on groundwater quality.
