Drylands in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are highly vulnerable ecosystems experiencing myriad challenges, including land degradation and climate change that threaten the region’s sustainability and resilience. Over the years, several initiatives with ambitious targets, such as the African Landscape Action Plan (ALAP) and the African Forest and Landscape Restoration Initiative (AFRI100), were employed to address these challenges and restore the drylands. However, achieving the targets is a complex process that requires the participation of multiple stakeholders in designing and implementing practical and sustainable dryland restoration practices. This chapter explores participatory approaches to dryland restoration in SSA involving multiple actors. The chapter utilized a combination of scholarly and gray literature. We consider how multi-stakeholder participatory approaches might be employed to achieve dryland restoration targets in dryland ecosystems of sub-Saharan Africa, where resource constraints, among other challenges, make restoration efforts very challenging. Thematic analysis of case studies explored the efficacy of multi-stakeholder interventions in water management, forest restoration, and soil conservation practices in sub-Saharan African countries. Multi-stakeholders’ direct and indirect involvement and participation have proven to be key enablers in the pursuit of ecosystem-based dryland restoration. It also emerged that multi-stakeholder approaches improve long-term sustainability and promote dryland ecological resilience and positive social and economic effects by fostering shared purpose among stakeholders such as practitioners, policymakers, and researchers. However, funding, governance, and capacity-building challenges can affect this approach. Thus, this paper recommends integrating a participatory approach to dryland restoration into national and regional policies with a focus on context-specific, adaptive, and inclusive programs.
