Drylands encompass land areas characterised by a mean annual precipitation to mean annual potential evapotranspiration ratio (known as the aridity index) below 0.65 (UNEP 1992). The aridity index defines four primary dryland categories: hyper-arid (aridity index <0.05), arid (0.05 ≤ aridity index <0.20), semi-arid (0.20 ≤ aridity index <0.50) and dry sub-humid (0.50 ≤ aridity index <0.65). Drylands cover about 42% of the earth’s terrestrial surface, encompass diverse and unique regions globally (Lewin et al. 2024) and support nearly 2.5 billion people (Eldridge et al. 2024; Huang et al. 2017), making them some of the most fragile yet vital ecosystems of the planet (Fig. 1.1).
