The purpose of this study is to categorize the metaphorical headlines of Euro 2020 football on eight Iranian news websites that cover the Euro 2020 football competition. The researchers intend to determine the frequency of metaphorical words in these texts from the perspective of critical metaphor theory and based on the Charteris-Black framework (Corpus approaches to critical metaphor analysis. Palgrave Macmillan, 2004), and according to Fauconnier and Turner’s (The way we think. Basic Books, 2002) theory of conceptual blending. To this end, they have collected a corpus of the news texts of these headlines. These headlines have been categorized into 11 metaphorical domains. The domains of Alias, Tint, Banquet, and Blended metaphors were identified for the first time by the authors and have not been mentioned in previous studies. The Alias metaphor is the most noteworthy category/domain with 64 metaphorical titles allocated to it, followed by War and Route metaphors. After that, the authors compiled a corpus of texts consisting of 411,414 words and examined the frequency of metaphorical words in it. Among the metaphorical words in the corpus, the phrase “team” from the sports domain had the highest amount, with a count of 5271 and a frequency of 11,629.45. The phrase “final” from the Route domain ranked second, with a count of 1037 and a frequency of 2287.94. The phrase “three lions” from the Alias domain was the third most prevalent metaphorical expression, with a count of 275 and a frequency of 606.76. Sports writers employ metaphorical expressions in their texts to enhance readers’ comprehension of the topic and content.
