Multimodal Discourse Analysis: How Power Struggles Shape the City?
摘要
This study explores how power struggles shape urban spaces through multimodal critical discourse analysis (MCDA). Moving beyond text-based approaches, MCDA examines the interplay of language, visuals, sounds, and spatial design to reveal underlying ideological structures. Using Tehran’s Valiasr intersection as a case study, this research investigates how authorities manipulate urban environments to reinforce specific narratives and control public behavior. By applying principles from critical discourse analysis and social semiotics, the study deciphers organizational, interactional, and representational meanings embedded in the built environment. Findings suggest that urban spaces function as multimodal texts, where power is negotiated through spatial design, movement regulations, and semiotic resources. Ultimately, this research highlights the potential of MCDA to uncover hidden power dynamics in urban discourse, fostering a deeper understanding of how meaning is constructed, contested, and reshaped in everyday city life.
