International exchange programs in universities around the world are a response to the globalization demands. International students are being sent to universities abroad in the hope of being nurtured as interculturally competent citizens who are well equipped to deal with today’s complicated world. It is very important for university leaders to recognize that students do not necessarily develop intercultural competence by just participating in study abroad programs. Intercultural competence is an individual’s ability to understand other cultures and to communicate with people from other cultures effectively and properly. To be interculturally competent, one needs to be equipped with intercultural knowledge, attitude, skill, and awareness as sub-dimensions of this competency. The aim of the present study was to determine international students’ level of intercultural communicative competence in Iran and whether there are significant relationships between these students’ intercultural communicative competence and their level of host (Persian) language proficiency, not to mention their prior experience of being abroad. The data were collected from 60 international students at Yazd University. As the analyses indicated, the international students at Yazd University showed high levels of intercultural competence, intercultural knowledge, intercultural awareness, and intercultural skills. These students’ intercultural attitude was high. Furthermore, positive relationships were found between their level of intercultural competence and their Persian language proficiency and prior experience of being abroad.
