Taboo is an activity or behavior forbidden or prohibited in society and can be related to a particular culture or religion. It is grounded in morality and refers to the proscription of behavior in a speech community in a specific context or setting. There has always been an implicit prohibition on an utterance or behavior based on the cultural norms of a society. Therefore, it is a universal topic of study in pragmatics. This study provided a comprehensive synthesis and systematic review of articles and research projects on the speech act of taboo by Iranian authors from 2012 to 2022. It was an attempt to convey what knowledge and ideas have been established on taboos in Iran. It also reviewed the strengths and weaknesses of each scholarly article by reviewing the reports. This research study thus appraised and synthesized research evidence from various studies on taboos conducted in Iran based on the presented protocol. It critically evaluated all the collected relevant research studies through valid analyses by focusing on the theoretical frameworks, methodologies, designs, corpus, instruments, and topics of the papers. In doing so, an extensive bibliographical search on taboo was yielded, and the research papers were critically scrutinized. A database was prepared based on the content analysis of 48 articles, and descriptive statistics were reported through frequency and percentage. The study findings showed that the majority of the papers had a descriptive design and statistics. The most frequently investigated topics were subtitling, dubbing, and fan-subbing; the least commonly researched one was teaching English as a foreign language. Taboo translation from English to Persian received much more attention compared to Persian to English. Moreover, translators’ decisions to employ equivalents, avoid terms, delete content, or use euphemisms were significantly influenced by factors tied to religion, personal beliefs, or cultural background. This chapter presented the context by showing what has been done in the field, exposed the gap in the current knowledge, and provided a map of essential issues to pave the ground for future trends and studies. The study tried to minimize the risk of bias by providing a transparent, systematic review based on the research synthesis and critical evaluation. It also suggested directions for future studies on this particular speech act.
