Plant-Pollinator Interaction

Pollinators are vital components of terrestrial ecosystems, underpinning plant reproduction and maintaining biodiversity through their pollination and ecosystem service activity. This ecological service supports over 87% of flowering plant species and is essential for the productivity of more than 75% of global crop species. The intricate mutualisms between plants and their pollinators have evolved over millions of years, resulting in a complex web of co-adapted traits that ensure reproductive success and ecological resilience. However, pollinator populations worldwide are facing unprecedented threats from habitat destruction, pesticide use, climate change, disease, and invasive species. These pressures are not only disrupting plant-pollinator interactions but also endangering food security and ecosystem stability. The ecological and economic importance of pollinators necessitates urgent conservation measures. In this chapter we discuss (i) the biology and diversity of pollinators, (ii) the mechanisms of floral adaptation, (iii) the ecological and agricultural significance of pollination and (iv) outline the multifaceted threats faced by pollinators and present integrated conservation strategies including habitat restoration, policy interventions, scientific monitoring, and public engagement. Through a synthesis of current research and case studies, this work emphasizes the need for collaborative, science-based approaches in protecting pollinators and their health and thereby protecting the essential services provided by pollinators to both natural ecosystems and human societies.
